Alive with love

Yesterday we celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which has a special place in the Ignatian tradition thanks to St Claude La Colombiere. This article by James Hanvey SJ explains something of this Heart, which is fully alive and ever-loving.

Today our focus is on the Immaculate Heart of Mary, whose Heart was most closely United to her Son's. This feast rarely receives as much attention as yesterday's, but it also speaks of a heart which is alive and filled with love.

We send our greetings and assurances of prayer to the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart, the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart and the Daughters of the Heart of Mary.

Prepare your heart

Painting by Stephen B Whatley
In a few days' time it will be the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, in which we celebrate the outpouring of God's tender, infinite love for us all. This year we approach the feast conscious of so much pain, death and division in our world and in our country. This novena from Pray as you Go can help us prepare our hearts for this feast, and focus us on the unifying, merciful, welcoming Heart of Jesus.

And we unite our prayers to so many others, for all those who have died, or been bereaved and dispossessed in the Grenfell Tower fire, for those killed and injured in the Finsbury Park mosque, and in gratitude for the ongoing, tireless work of our medical and emergency services, and all those who work for unity and justice.

Openness and missionary creativity

Earlier this month almost 120 delegates from Jesuit parishes throughout England and Scotland, aged from 21 to 89 and with roots in all continents, came together. Their aim was to learn from each other and from a panel of experts, how to breathe new energy into parish life to make them “centres of constant missionary outreach” (Evangelii Gaudiam 28).
