Awards for IBVMs

Two Irish missionary sisters, both members of the IBVM Loreto sisters, have been given awards for their work.

Sr Mary Owens, who has been in Kenya since 1969, has been presented with an award by the Kenyan Ministry of Health in appreciation of her tireless service, and dedication to the country's Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Programme.

And Sister Orla Treacy will receive the 2017 Hugh O'Flaherty International Humanitarian Award, for her work in South Sudan, widely considered one of the most fragile states in the world with continuing conflict and unrest.

The Award itself is a commemoration of the Irish priest who saved several thousand Jews from the Nazis during World War II, and whose story was told in the film The Scarlet and the Black, starring Gregory Peck.
